The Ashanti-style Stool is a sculptural seating piece that weaves together West African craft traditions with the rich symbolic heritage of Southeast Asia. Expertly hand-carved from solid teak wood (Tectona grandis), its form is shaped around the Gunungan (Kayon) — the iconic tapered figure from Javanese wayang theatre — reimagined here as both a visual anchor and a functional carrying handle.

In Javanese performance, the Gunungan represents the cosmic mountain and the Tree of Life (Kalpataru), symbolising creation, continuity, and renewal. Traditionally used to mark the opening and closing of a wayang story, it speaks to cycles of beginning and return, balance and transition. These meanings translate naturally into the form of a stool — a grounding presence within everyday moments of rest, gathering, and reflection.

The handle rises in a smooth, conical silhouette that fits comfortably in the hand, while its flowing contours echo volcanic landscapes and organic, tree-like forms found throughout Southeast Asian art. At the center, intricate hand-carved reliefs depict traditional Javanese motifs, each cut with intention to express ideas of protection, harmony, and continuity. Similar life-tree imagery can be found on historic objects in museum collections around the world, underscoring the Gunungan’s enduring cultural relevance.

Every Ashanti-style Stool is carved individually by a master artisan — known in Java as an ukir — who spends more than a week shaping each piece by hand. This slow, deliberate process embraces variation rather than uniformity, reflecting the Wabi-Sabi appreciation of imperfection and human touch. Crafted from sustainably sourced teak prized for its strength, longevity, and natural resistance to moisture, the stool features detailed Javanese iconography, a softly contoured seat, and a sculptural base that balances refinement with durability. Its inherent resilience makes it suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.

Produced in limited quantities, each stool functions as both a collectible object and a practical piece of furniture. Custom carvings — from symbolic motifs to personal insignia — can be commissioned, allowing every stool to carry a narrative unique to its owner. More than a functional seat, the Ashanti-style Stool becomes a tactile expression of balance and protection — grounding to hold, meaningful within the home, and rich in cultural storytelling. Whether placed as seating, a side table, or a sculptural accent, it invites touch, conversation, and connection.

With durability in mind, this stool is robust, allowing it to be stored outside year round. Teak naturally weathers over time and the wood will change in appearance to a beautiful silvery grey patina.

If left untreated, teak wood will naturally weather into a sophisticated silver grey patina. All this stool needs is an occasional wash with soap and water to stay in top condition.

This stool will be delivered fully assembled for your immediate enjoyment.

What is meant by ‘Pre-Order’?

Pre-ordering means ordering an item that is currently not in stock.
The advantage of pre-ordering, is that the item is ‘ring-fenced’ for delivery to yourself as soon as it comes in stock.

If a product is temporarily out-of-stock, it will be stated clearly, as the usual ‘Add to Basket’ button will be replaced by a ‘Pre-Order’ button. Additionally, once the item has been selected, a date displayed indicates when the item is scheduled to arrive into our warehouse. We deliver throughout the country, over a 2-week cycle, therefore, depending on your delivery postcode, you should receive your order between 1 to 14 days from the scheduled date.
